Glossary of Speaker Terms

 

In this blog I’ll try to be use as little technical terms as possible, for the simple reason that it’s not necessarily useful in our search for cheap computer speakers. Sure, it’s good to know all these numbers but it ultimately boils down to the actual performance and personal preference to the speakers. As I’ve mentioned in the buying guide, reading reviews will pretty much suffice to inform you adequately about the product.

Regardless, it might still be useful to know some common terms that might be used in these reviews, and what they mean for you. It’s not going to be especially extensive, just the bare essentials that might apply. I’ll try to describe them in as newbie-friendly a manner as possible and keep jargon to a minimum but that means it won’t be the most in-depth. I may add entries over the course of time.

Hopefully you’re read my previous entry on what to do before you even start looking for speakers. Narrowing down your choices will make things a lot easier. Having your core needs pre-determined makes the selection process more about fulfilling supplementary criteria, rather than the basic requirements. Furthermore, you don’t want to spend your precious money on a set of fancy speakers only to find you don’t need all that power. I mean, that’s why we’re looking for CHEAP computer speakers here aren’t we? That said, at this point you would probably start comparison shopping; that is, searching at different online retail outlets for the best deals on the best products based on prices and consumer reviews. This is a fairly extensive process that can be quite time consuming and overwhelming. Onboard Sound Cards vs Dedicated Sound Cards

 

There’s a bit of an ongoing debate on whether it actually makes a difference when using the onboard sound card from your motherboard or an actual separate sound card plugged in (whether external or internal). Times have changed since the old days of onboard cards being hopelessly obsolete, but that’s not to say that dedicated cards aren’t worth getting either. The decision isn’t as clear cut as, say, video cards, where getting one is absolutely imperative if you’re using your computer for more than browsing e-mails.

Before You Start Looking for Computer Speakers

 

Speakers are an oft-forgotten part when building a computer. With all the attention on the horsepower of the PC such as RAM, CPU speed, graphic cards etc, it is often cast aside and left till the last minute. In fact, even cooling systems seem to be a bigger focus than computer systems these days. When everything is set up, looking pretty and fly, one might notice something missing: the only thing audible is a hum coming from the PC’s fans. Of course, this site being what it’s called, I’m talking about the speakers.
